The Hardiness Zones of Quebec and Surroundings

What is a Hardiness Zone?

Hardiness is the ability of plants to withstand the rigors of winter. The Canadian territory is classified into nine hardiness zones ranging from 0 to 8. The highest numbers correspond to places where winter is mildest. Additionally, each zone is divided into two classes, "a" and "b." Class "a" is slightly colder than "b."

Indicator for Choosing Your Plants

You can grow perennials, trees, and shrubs with the zone number of your region or a lower number. For example, if you are in a zone classified as 5b, you can plant the range of plants from zone 5b or colder zones (5a, 4, 3, 2, etc.).

There are often microclimates within a given zone. These microclimates are often favored by windbreaks or various other means. The snow layer can also play a significant role in the survival of plants during the winter. Snow remains the best insulator there is. It prevents the soil from freezing when it arrives early and protects the parts located beneath its surface from the cold.

When there is snow and you live in a microclimate, it is sometimes possible to plant vegetation from higher zones in a lower zoned area. However, it is important to properly protect these plants with winter protection.
