How to prolong the blooming of your annuals until autumn

Annuals are the stars of our gardens throughout the summer. With their bright colors and generous blooms, they beautify flower beds, planters, and terrace pots. Good news: a few simple steps are enough to keep them beautiful until the first chills!

Here are five tips to enjoy their flowers even longer.

1. Remove faded flowers

This is undoubtedly the most important step! By regularly removing faded flowers, the plant stops dedicating its energy to producing seeds and redirects it towards creating new flowers.

Take a few minutes each week to take a little tour of the garden: your annuals will thank you with even more abundant blooms.

2. Give them a little boost with fertilizer

Annuals are demanding! As they bloom continuously for several months, they quickly deplete the nutrients in the soil.

A fertilizer designed for flowering plants, applied according to the manufacturer's recommendations, will promote continuous blooming and bright colors.

Tip: Plants in pots and planters generally need to be fertilized more often than those planted in the ground.

3. Water at the right time

The hot days of August can quickly dry out the soil, especially in containers.

Water generously when the soil starts to dry, preferably early in the morning or in the evening, to limit evaporation. Deep watering is always preferable to small, repeated amounts of water.

4. Prune plants that stretch

Some annuals, like petunias, calibrachoas, or verbenas, can become long and less full over the summer.

Don't hesitate to trim them slightly. Even if it may seem drastic at the time, this small pruning often stimulates new growth and even more generous blooming a few weeks later.

5. Keep an eye on your plants

Enjoy your time in the garden to observe your plants. Yellowed leaves, damaged stems, or signs of insects can sometimes slow down blooming.

Regular maintenance allows for quick intervention and keeps arrangements healthy until autumn.

The secret? A little attention, lots of flowers!

Annuals are surprisingly generous. With a few minutes of maintenance each week, they will continue to brighten your outdoor spaces for several more weeks.
