Our Planting Tips for Trees and Shrubs

Planting trees and shrubs can seem difficult if you've never done it before. To make the task easier for you, here are some tips for planning, preparation, and planting.

Planning

Select trees that grow well in your climate and soil. When choosing them, make sure to respect the hardiness zone, as each species has different tolerance levels:

  • to late spring and early fall frosts
  • to flooding
  • to drought.

For advice, trust your Passion Jardins retailer. They will help you make the right choices that match your environment and desired maintenance.

Preparation

Container trees can be planted at any time, as long as the soil is not frozen. Keep them in their container until planting and water them before planting. To minimize stress for your trees, protect them during transport and keep them in a shaded area until planting.

Planting: 14 Easy Steps

Want to successfully plant your large trees and conifers as well as your small shrubs and potted plants?

To plant your large trees and conifers, follow these steps:

  • Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball and twice as wide.
  • Completely remove non-biodegradable packaging.
  • If the root ball of your plant is wrapped in a wire basket, remove it and the upper half of the burlap. However, avoid breaking or destabilizing the root ball.
  • If necessary, set up a stake.
  • Attach the trunk to the stake with a strap.
  • Center the tree or conifer.
  • Center the root ball in the planting hole and apply planting fertilizer according to the dosage and recommendations on the container.
  • Since new roots need to come into contact with the fertilizer, make sure to spread it well around the root ball.
  • Fill the hole with a homogeneous mixture of soil and planting fertilizer, according to the recommendation of your garden center and the prescribed dosage on the package.
  • Level the surface to avoid compacting the soil.
  • With the remaining soil, form a water retention basin, a ridge 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) thick, all around the root ball.
  • Apply mulch about 5 cm (2 inches) thick.
  • Clear the mulch from the trunk in a radius of 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches).
  • Water everything deeply.

For your small shrubs and potted plants, repeat the same procedure as above for large trees and conifers, except for steps 3 and 4.
