The leaves are changing color and will soon fall; we've put away the sandals and summer dresses to slip into woolens and boots: it's autumn! And autumn also means Halloween! If you are a fan of horror – or candy – you probably have some decoration ideas for your home, both inside and out. To add a bit of green to your Halloween decor, here are a few ideas to vary from the traditional carved pumpkin.

Autumn Chrysanthemum

Autumn wouldn't be what it is without autumn chrysanthemums. Beautiful, colorful, and very tolerant, they add a truly interesting touch of color to autumn flower beds.

If you want to keep your pumpkin as intact as possible to turn it into soup on November 1st, you can create a simple arrangement including some gourds, pots of chrysanthemums in various shades, dried corn stalks that you can find at some Passion Jardins stores, and without having to carve your pumpkin, you have a Halloween decor.

If you plan to compost your pumpkin the day after the holiday, you can carve it and fill the bottom with soil to plant your chrysanthemums, as if it were a pot.

Eco-friendly tip: If you don't like pumpkin, small animals, squirrels, mice, and others love it. Leave it in a corner of the garden. It will serve as food during more difficult times for wildlife.

Succulents

Succulents go very well with pumpkins. Many, like sedums and houseleeks, are tolerant enough to stay outside even when it's cold. Empty your pumpkin and plant an assortment of succulents. You can also paint some pumpkins for an even more interesting effect.

You can also create your table centerpieces in the same way. Since they are intended for indoors, you can choose other less tolerant varieties. Adding small LED light garlands around your arrangement can bring undeniable charm to your Halloween table.

Jack-o’-lantern plant version

If you like more traditional lantern pumpkins, the ones where you cut out the eyes, nose, and mouth, nothing stops you from adding a small plant touch that will catch the eye.

Once your pumpkin is hollowed out and cleaned, draw the face you want and then place a lantern inside. For obvious reasons, opt for battery-powered lanterns over candles: plants and fire don't necessarily mix well. Instead of putting the lid back on the gourd, give it a playful wig using a trailing plant like burro's tail, string-of-pearls, or pothos. Prefer a spiky style? Go with grasses like blue fescue, sedge, or blue oat grass! Ferns and spider plants also make excellent hairstyles.

If the weather permits, you can put your well-coiffed pumpkins outside on Halloween night, but you should avoid leaving the plants outside at this time of year. It’s better to use this option for your indoor decoration.

Leave the plant in its pot; you can place it elsewhere in your decor once the festivities are over.

Shopping for your Halloween decor? Visit your Passion Jardins store, and you'll find plenty of interesting plant decoration ideas for this holiday. Every occasion is a good one to add a touch of green to your life!
