A plant with silver leaves? Does that exist? Oh yes! And they are magnificent plants for decor that stands out! In this article, I will talk to you about the Scindapsus pictus.
Scindapsus Silver hero
The Origin and Characteristics of Scindapsus
It is a plant in the Araceae family, native to India, Thailand, and the Philippines. It stands out notably for its leaves with a variation of a silver color.
In garden centers or nurseries, Scindapsus is often confused with pothos (it is sometimes seen under the name "silver pothos"), but in fact, it is not a variety of pothos, despite its small resemblances.
If you observe it closely, its leaves are much thicker and stiffer than those of a pothos. They also have a more elongated appearance.
Another charming characteristic? It is a trailing or climbing plant. In nature, you can see it clinging to trees to grow.

Care for Scindapsus Pictus
It is a fairly easy plant to care for. You just need to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering. I also suggest waiting to see the leaves curve a bit before watering. It is not necessary to mist the Scindapsus or place it on clay pebbles.
In terms of light, I advise you to place it in a well-lit room, but not in direct sunlight. It can tolerate direct sunlight, but morning sun is preferable.
As for the soil, I recommend repotting it in well-draining soil to prevent the roots from staying too wet for too long. My favorite mix: Indoor plant potting soil + perlite + orchid soil.
For the pot, a terracotta or perforated plastic pot will do.
This plant propagates easily, under a node. You can propagate it directly in soil or in water according to your preference. Remember that the plant will need to regrow its root system if you propagate it in water.
In my decor, I love showcasing it in a hanging planter or on shelves and letting it trail.

Common Problems with Scindapsus
Common problems with this plant are often due to incorrect watering. It does not tolerate overwatering and does not like to be forgotten either. Unwanted insects frequently found on Scindapsus are thrips, as thrips love large juicy leaves, haha! Some Scindapsus often grow "etiolated," as the leaves are very distant on the stem. What I suggest is a small trim of these stems so it remains well-filled.
Varieties of Scindapsus
There are really many varieties of Scindapsus. Collectors love to collect them because they are fairly easy plants. You can let them trail or climb to have larger leaves. I particularly love the Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’ which really has huge leaves. At home, I also have the Scindapsus Argyreus, the silver splash, the silver hero, and the treubii moonlight.
I would like to expand my collection eventually.
