Vegetable planting for small spaces

Do you live in an apartment or condo? Do you have a very limited space to set up your seedlings? These are not reasons to miss out. You just need to make informed choices and use the right equipment to optimize your space. Here are some tips:

Choose the right varieties

Some vegetables have a very short germination time and can be easily planted directly in the ground. This is the case, among others, for lettuces, peas, beans, and onion bulbs. There is no need to use space to sow them indoors.

Some vegetables like carrots and beets are less sensitive to temperature fluctuations. You can therefore wait and plant them directly in the garden.

Tomatoes and peppers, on the other hand, are more sensitive to cold and have a slightly longer germination time. If you want to start your plants from seeds, you need to sow them indoors. Otherwise, opt for young plants.

Simplicity and efficiency

The more limited your space, the more you want to make the most of it. So choose vegetables and herbs that you like and will consume. Planting seeds that you won't eat won't do anyone any good. Also opt for simplicity and avoid sowing species known to give amateur gardeners a hard time, such as celery and cauliflower for vegetables, and rosemary and parsley for herbs. If you want them fresh at home this summer, visit your Passion Jardins retailer in season, where you'll find ready-to-plant seedlings that will offer you a much better yield.

Optimize the space

There are mini-greenhouses that can be a great help for your small spaces. The shelves are stacked, allowing you to set up your seedlings in tiers. Easily dismantled, you can store it once your seedlings are moved to the garden. It will even be useful when it comes time to acclimate your young shoots to the outdoors. The more handy among you can even build one! You will need to rotate your trays to ensure that all your seedlings have good access to sunlight or light to grow straight and strong.

And there you go! No more excuses! Get to your seedlings!
