Make your own homemade mosquito repellent...with garden plants!

Terrase été

Summer, we love it for its long, gentle evenings, meals on the terrace, and moments in nature... but we love it a little less when mosquitoes get involved! 🦟 Instead of turning to commercial products, why not make your own homemade plant-based repellent? It's natural, economical, and frankly effective (not to mention it smells better!).

7 plants to incorporate into your landscaping to repel mosquitoes

  1. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon)
It's the queen of natural repellents! Its lemony scent masks the body odors that attract mosquitoes. Place it in pots on the terrace, near relaxation areas.

  2. Lavender
Highly appreciated for its soothing scent, lavender is hated by mosquitoes. It loves full sun and attracts pollinators... but not biters!

  3. Basil
Easy to grow in pots or in the garden, basil naturally repels mosquitoes. Place it near doors and windows, or on the outdoor table for an immediate effect.

  4. Peppermint
Its strong scent drives away many insects, mosquitoes included. Caution: it is invasive! Prefer pot cultivation.

  5. Rosemary
Aromatic, useful in cooking, and a natural repellent, rosemary ticks all the boxes. It tolerates heat well and pairs wonderfully with other Mediterranean plants.

  6. Lemon Balm (or Lemon Balm)
Often confused with tropical lemongrass, lemon balm also emits a lemony scent. It grows easily in fresh soil and attracts pollinators.

  7. Scented Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Some varieties of geraniums emit a strong lemony scent that disrupts mosquitoes. Grow them in pots to bring them closer to passage areas.

Where to plant them for more effectiveness?

To maximize the repellent effect of these plants:

  • Place them near relaxation areas (terrace, balcony, entrance).
  • Install them around windows and doors.
  • Create a plant shield with several varieties with complementary scents.
  • Also consider slightly crushing the leaves before settling outside: it releases the volatile oils that bother mosquitoes.

Bonus: they protect... without harming biodiversity

In addition to keeping mosquitoes away, these plants attract pollinators, perfume the ambient air, and add beauty to your landscaping. A simple gesture to create a pleasant and balanced ecosystem.

Mosquitoes don't like all plants... so take advantage of it! By choosing plants that combine beauty and utility, you create a more peaceful environment, naturally. Test, mix, arrange... and say goodbye to mosquitoes (without harming the planet). Visit your Passion Jardins retailer to get everything you need.

Have a great summer everyone!
