The orchid is a tropical flowering plant that leaves no one indifferent. Who knows why, it has an almost mystical aspect that captures everyone's attention. It comes in different varieties with spectacular colors and patterns. Have you ever seen monkey face orchids, Dracula, or ballerina orchids? Impressive is the only word that comes to mind.

Did you know...?
The orchid is an epiphyte plant, meaning it traditionally grows on another plant, most often a tree. This is why it does not appreciate potting soil or stagnant water. In our environment, however, it needs a good specially designed substrate and water to nourish itself.
Orchids are sensitive, even a bit diva-like. They therefore require some special care to be at their best. If you want your orchid to be happy, bloom for a long time and often, here are some little tips:
Lighting
Orchids appreciate good lighting but can be affected by the sun; the leaves may yellow and wither. Place them in a light-filled area, but where the sun's rays do not reach directly, especially in the afternoon. Also, be careful of significant temperature variations: keep them away from cold drafts and heat sources.

Watering
It is crucial to avoid overwatering orchids and, above all, never let the roots soak in water: they will rot for sure. Water your orchid when the substrate is dry and the roots turn white. Let your pot soak halfway for a few minutes, then allow the excess water to drain before placing the plant back in its cachepot. It is preferable not to water it from above or wet the center of the plant. Spray the leaves when it's hot; they will appreciate the humidity thus created.
If your home water is rich in limestone, opt for rainwater whenever possible or use demineralized water: orchids and limestone are not good friends. You can also add a little lemon juice to the watering water, which helps neutralize the limestone.
Repotting
It is not necessary to repot your orchid every year. The roots of this plant like to be confined, so do not choose a pot that is too large. Also, prefer a transparent pot, which you can put in a more aesthetically pleasing cachepot, of course. It allows you to monitor the color of your roots, the first sign of the plant's thirst. Wait until after flowering to repot. Here's how to proceed:
· Gently remove the plant from its original pot.
· Clean the roots by removing as much of the old substrate as possible and cutting off all dead or soft roots.
· Fill your pot halfway with a substrate specifically designed for orchids. Do not use potting soil for indoor plants; it will not work.
· Place your plant upright in the center and add orchid potting soil, pressing down with your fingers.
· Spray the substrate to moisten it, and that's it. For the first few weeks, while your plant adapts to its new environment: go easy on the watering; a simple misting should suffice.
Making an Orchid Bloom
The most common variety of orchid, the phalaenopsis or butterfly orchid, is usually not too difficult to cultivate. However, you should know that it typically blooms only once a year. If you want your orchid to bloom again, you need to provide it with optimal growing conditions and ideally, a temperature difference of about 5ºC between day and night. Once the flowering is over, cut the flower spike, the stem that has bloomed, just above the 2nd node; this will stimulate blooming.
