For their versatility, beauty, the wide variety available in garden centers, and ease of cultivation, perennials are essential in the garden. Whether chosen for their foliage or flowers, whether they are tall or short, intended to adorn a spot in full sun or more in the shade, there is a perennial for every need. To ensure your plants reach their full potential, there are still a few rules to follow.

The right plant in the right place

You have heard this phrase time and again since you started gardening... but it can never be repeated enough. It is THE key to success for all plants! Of course, you may fall in love with a plant during your store visit, but avoid succumbing to temptation if the plant does not suit your environment. Check the hardiness zone, sunlight, and soil type required, etc., before making your choice. You will have greater satisfaction in the long run.

You can plant perennials in beds on your property, in your flowerbeds, around your pool, along your foundation, and even in pots on your balcony, why not?! Perennials can be placed everywhere.

When to plant?

You can plant perennials at different times of the season. You can proceed as soon as the soil is thawed and plant until late autumn. Avoid heatwave periods to minimize the stress of transplantation for the plants. If possible, also choose a day without too much sun, as this will help as well. If you make your purchases on a day when it's impossible to plant your perennials, place them in the shade and sheltered from the wind as much as possible and water them daily until they are planted in the ground.

How to plant?

To ensure your perennials are properly established, follow these steps:

  • Dig a hole the same height as your plant and large enough to contain the entire root ball. The plant's collar will be at the same height as the soil once filled back in.
  • Add a handful of mycorrhizae in the planting hole to promote rooting.
  • Place your plant upright in the hole and backfill with a mix of the soil you removed and compost to properly nourish your plant. Firm the soil without over-compacting.
  • Water abundantly and deeply immediately after planting your perennial. Ensure the soil remains moist for the first few days following planting.

If you don't like the location of a perennial, you can easily move it by gently digging up the entire root ball and relocating it elsewhere on your property. Follow the same steps!

Over time, your perennials will expand. Consider this when designing your garden. When your plants become too large, you can trim or divide them to create new flowerbeds!
